Molecular tests (RNA or PCR tests)
• Process: The test requires a sample, which is collected by a health care provider, typically using a swab inserted into a person’s nose or throat and tests of saliva or other bodily fluids
• Purpose: look for genetic material that comes only from the virus
• Available: performed in hospitals, medical office (lab)
• Results: Depends on lab capacity, may be ready within hours, may take at least a day or two
Antigen tests (rapid tests)
• Process: nasal or throat swab
• Purpose: Test looks for protein fragments (antigens) from the virus
• Available: Hospital, doctor’s office
• Results: Less than an hour
Antibody tests (serology test/blood test)
• Process: Taking a sample of blood
• Purpose: Does not detect the virus itself, instead, they detect the antibodies produced • in response to an infection
